Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Lincoln biographer David Herbert Donald used surviving documents to calculate that the first lady may have held eight séances in the White House. The boy’s death devastated both his parents, but Mary Todd Lincoln’s grief was especially debilitating. She stayed in bed for weeks and couldn’t bear to attend his funeral. But even when she rejoined society, Lincoln longed for a reunion with her deceased son.

The number of CVCs has increased rapidly in recent years. But how are those CVCs actually doing?

Nearly half of the building, located at the corner of Harwood Street and Woodall Rodgers Freeway, has been pre-leased to Charlotte financial institution Bank of America. Still, according to Eggen, who was previously the managing director of Qualcomm Ventures North America, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns in CVC land. The environment for CVCs, Eggen says, is actually kind of mixed right now—some CVCs are dialing back investments, while others are doubling down. By World War II, spiritualism no longer attracted the acolytes it once had, and White House séances became a curious footnote in history.

The White House was again in a state of mourning during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge in 1924. Coolidge’s 16-year-old son Calvin played a game of tennis––but he wasn’t wearing socks with his shoes. A blister formed on a toe and festered, and the infection turned septic. National and personal tragedy converged in the thick of the Civil War when Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln buried one of their children. On February 20, 1862, 11-year-old Willie Lincoln died in the White House after battling typhoid fever for weeks.

He deplored spiritualism, séances, and mediums, all of which underwent a revival in the wake of World War I and the influenza pandemic. He was on a quest to expose mediums and psychics as the charlatans he believed them to be. Reflecting Americans’ belief in spirits unseen, some of the country’s first families held séances at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They nursed their grief with the help of mediums, demonstrating that séances aren’t only about the deceased; they’re also about the living. The Fox sisters’ allegations electrified Americans eager to connect with deceased loved ones—individuals such as Jane Pierce. Fascinated by their narrative, she invited them to Washington. On January 6, 1853, newly elected president Franklin Pierce and his wife Jane experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. Their only surviving child, 11-year-old Bennie, died in a horrific train accident in Massachusetts.

To make solid venture investments, a CVC needs to be able to think and act independently of the more entrenched ideas that a parent company might have. And though returning capital is important, it’s not the only thing that matters—large companies also expect strategic gains, whether that’s new technology or a new product geared towards the company’s customers. “More than 70 new CVC units started in 2023, and the number of corporate venture capital organizations grew 10x over the last decade,” said Sneha Shah, EVP and head of new business ventures at SEI, via email. Some reports estimate that there are as many as 2,000 CVCs, up from several hundred in 2021. Corporate venture capital, or CVC, is a bridge between the public and private markets.

The 9 Main Principles of Design Everyone Should Know

variety in design principles

You’ll also learn why visual design is so important, how history influences the present, and practical applications to improve your own work. These insights will help you to achieve the best possible user experience. With the elements of visual design and design principles in mind, we will analyse a few websites to see how they come together, and why the designs work. Balance can be achieved by having symmetry in the design (for instance, having a webpage with centralised text and images). However, you can also achieve balance without symmetry — perhaps unsurprisingly, this is known as asymmetrical balance. We achieve asymmetrical balance when we arrange differently sized elements in a way that results in unity.

Visual Design Principles

variety in design principles

The most common of these design principles include balance, contrast, alignment, emphasis, repetition, hierarchy, and unity. In the first lesson, you’ll learn the difference between visual design elements and visual design principles. You’ll also learn how to effectively use visual design elements and principles by deconstructing several well-known designs. The elements of visual design — line, shape, negative/white space, volume, value, colour and texture — describe the building blocks of a product’s aesthetics. On the other hand, the principles of design tell us how these elements can and should go together for the best results. Many of the principles below are closely related and complement one another.

Consider Color

Today, designers use illustrations in many ways, with the goal of achieving unity in their design. One of the greatest allies that every artist or designer need is to have a proper understanding of the principles of design. There are different principles today, and they all have different applications, depending on your preference and what you try to achieve in your design. As a designer, for you to be able to effectively apply any design principle, you’ll need to gain mastery of the different design compositions. For this, you only need to ensure that you effectively process negative and positive colors appropriately. This implies that you’ll need to avoid perfect geometric shapes, edges, and straight lines.

Rhythm

Tracks ad performance and user engagement, helping deliver ads that are most useful to you. Enables personalizing ads based on user data and interactions, allowing for more relevant advertising experiences across Google services. Saves your settings and preferences, like your location, for a more personalized experience.

Gestalt Unity

This is because there is no one set of design principles that applies to all designs. It’s entirely possible to create a good design without a thorough understanding of these elements and principles of design. Designers could save a lot of time and energy by practicing the principles we have discussed until they become second-nature. Gestalt is important, for instance, in making separate sections of a website distinct by increasing the white space between them.

Hierarchy

Because the content is scientific, these elements are a perfect match. Everyone has seen a website or other design out there that seemed to just throw elements on a page with no regard for how they worked together. Newspaper ads that use ten different fonts come to mind almost immediately. Hierarchy is most easily illustrated through the use of titles and headings in a design. The title of a page should be given the most importance, and therefore should be immediately recognizable as the most important element on a page. Headings and subheadings should be formatted in a way that shows their importance in relation to each other as well as in relation to the title and body copy.

Variety creates a visual break in your communication so that it isn’t overly predictable. The first reason customers lose interest in your messaging is they expect to see the same thing from the same brand without any novelty. You likely want to direct how your audience consumes the content you create. This natural progression of one’s eyes, from one object to another, can be controlled by the design of the content. Another way that emphasis can be achieved is through proportion. Conceptual unity occurs when the artwork unites ideas known by just the artist or those that everyone understands.

Examples of Visual Design Elements and Principles

Small doses of variety are helpful to ensure that your customers are not lulled to sleep. It forms the guidelines for designing your most essential and least significant aspects with the help of typography, color, contrast, images, and more. Rhythm lets you pick a style where you can consistently deliver valuable information to customers with a smaller learning arch.

Color

Some brands may need more order in their communications, while others thrive on chaos. Once a designer understands the basic design principles, they can more intentionally combine those principles to create designs that are aesthetically pleasing and functional. In user experience (UX) design, minimizing users’ cognitive loads and decision-making time is vital. Design principles are guidelines, biases and design considerations that designers apply with discretion. Movement refers to the way a user’s eyes move across your composition. Dynamic designs encourage lots of eye movement, while static ones encourage less.

Unity can also reveal symbolism to the viewer, creating a subjective experience that is unique to the viewer. This painting of these flowers is a perfect example of symmetrical balance, where everything is a mirror reflection from left to right. For instance, if the flowers were faded and turning brown and the robot was dull and rusted. But instead, the bright colors help paint a scene that is innocent and welcoming. Even though most of the shapes here are symmetrical, we can still see some asymmetrical shapes, such as the birds, but are still classed as shapes. Speed up creating your how-to guides, training documentation, and interactive product demos with the...

Be consistent with navigational mechanisms, organizational structure, etc., to make a stable, reliable and predictable design. Focus on emotion – the pleasure of use is as vital as ease of use; arouse users’ passion for increasing engagement. Use defaults wisely – when you offer predetermined, well-considered options, you help minimize users’ decisions and increase efficiency. Show users where they’ve come from and where they’re headed with signposts/cues.

For critics, the seven principles of design also help ensure they aren’t labeling works as “bad” just because they don’t suit their personal tastes, too. While there’s no real objective way to critique art, the principles of design provide a kind of rubric for assessing whether a piece of art functions. The difference between the principles of design and taste is important. This is true for many commercial artists, where their clients’ tastes might not reflect their own. Even fine artists need to be able to do this so that they aren’t conforming their art to others’ tastes.

Designing a Relational Database and Creating an Entity Relationship Diagram by Craig Dickson

relational database design

Although relational databases quickly grew in popularity, a few of the relational model’s shortcomings started to become apparent as data became more valuable and businesses began storing more of it. For one thing, it can be difficult to scale a relational database horizontally. Horizontal scaling, or scaling out, is the practice of adding more machines to an existing stack in order to spread out the load and allow for more traffic and faster processing.

Designing a Relational Database and Creating an Entity Relationship Diagram

It shares some features with MySQL, with the notable addition of MVCC (multi-version concurrency control), making it ACID compliant. Our database might have a table containing customer information, with columns representing customer names or addresses, while each row contains data for one individual customer. On the other hand, NoSQL databases don't need to rely on structure as much, which allows them to store large amounts of data, remain flexible, and easily scale storage and performance. The relationship between the Customers and Orders tables is a one-to-many relationship, which means that one customer can place multiple orders, but each order can only belong to one customer. This is indicated by the line connecting the tables with a 1 on one end and a N on the other end. The materialized view is created by selecting data from one or more base tables in the Master Site and storing them in a new table in the Materialized View Site.

Products and pricing

Complicated data relations also slow down querying and negatively affect performance. PostgreSQL retains a high level of performance and flexibility, even when handling large databases. It's the right choice for users that need high read/write speeds and extensive data analysis. Illinois Tech is a top-tier, nationally ranked, private research university with programs in engineering, computer science, architecture, design, science, business, human sciences, and law.

Types of Creational Patterns

But to use relational databases well, you need to follow some patterns that solve common problems and make your data work better. In this article, we will look at different patterns for relational databases, and explain how they can help you with specific issues and improve your database performance. This conceptual article outlines the history of the relational model, how relational databases organize data, and how they’re used today.

relational database design

The double lines indicate total participation, which means every entity in the table must participate in the relationship — in our case this means every course must have a teacher. The single lines indicate partial participation, so in our case there may exist some teachers who are not yet or not currently teaching any courses. Here is a slightly longer explanation of this distinction if you would like to read some more. Our next step is to think about which attributes we want to store for each of our entities. This may be spelled out in detail in our requirements document, or it may require more discretion on the part of the database developer.

For example, the section on normalization and how to progress through the different forms/stages is not exactly correct. Specifically, the book gives an incomplete definition of normalization, and the example of 1NF shows the wrong primary key. In addition, the figures in the book link to other unrelated figures when you click them to get a closer look. At this point, we’ve discussed all the major components of database design in DBMS tutorials. It’s crucial to understand that database design isn’t just a one-off process; it’s an ongoing cycle that requires careful planning, implementation, and maintenance. It’s a process that requires patience, practice and a lot of learning-by-doing.

We've sweated the details in designing DrawSQL's visual interface. With very little effort, you'll get beautiful entity-relationship diagrams that stand out. The database modeling process is just simple and intuitive, unlike any other database diagramming tool out there. The image shows how the tables are related to each other with arrows. The arrows indicate that there is a one-to-many relationship between the issue and customfieldvalue tables, and between the customfield and customfieldvalue tables. This means that each record in the issue or customfield table can have multiple records in the customfieldvalue table, but each record in the customfieldvalue table can have only one record in the issue or customfield table.

It also limits the maximum size of the database to 32,000 columns and 140 TB. MariaDB builds upon the MySQL base by adding support for even more storage engines and fixing storage engine limitations. This allows it to perform even faster than MySQL and run both SQL and NoSQL in a single database.

Advantages and Limitations of Relational Databases

The materialized view can then be queried like a regular table, without having to access the base tables every time. The materialized view can also be refreshed periodically or on demand, to reflect the changes in the base tables. Suppose we have a table called vehicles that stores information about cars, trucks, and motorcycles. We can use STI to store all the vehicles in one table, with a column called type that specifies the subclass of each vehicle.

When a new row is written to the table, a new unique value for the primary key is generated; this is the key that the system uses primarily for accessing the table. Other, more natural keys may also be identified and defined as alternate keys (AK). Often several columns are needed to form an AK (this is one reason why a single integer column is usually made the PK). Both PKs and AKs have the ability to uniquely identify a row within a table. Additional technology may be applied to ensure a unique ID across the world, a globally unique identifier, when there are broader system requirements. Today, autonomous technology is building upon the strengths of the relational model, cloud database technology, and machine learning to deliver a new type of relational database.

These trends are shaping how we approach data modeling and storage, and will continue to influence the field in the years to come. In our case we can say that a teacher teaches a course, or — going the other way — a course is taught by a teacher. It makes sense to think of this relation as based on the verb ‘teaches’. Notice that the ‘teacher’ field in our diagram is now coloured green, to remind us that this attribute is a foreign key, which references the teacher_id attribute in the teacher entity. We repeat the process for each entity, thinking about what information is relevant. During this process we will often discover that what we thought of as an attribute might be better represented as its own table, or we might notice that the same information is being stored reduntantly on two tables.

23 Fabulous Living Room Curtain Ideas

living room curtain design

Hang curtains near the ceiling to emphasize its grand height or to create the illusion of height in a living room with low ceilings. One of the biggest design mistakes you can make is hanging the rod too close to the top of the window frame, so when in doubt, mount it halfway or two-thirds of the way to the ceiling. When taking measurements for window treatments, make sure to measure from the rod to where you want the curtains to end to get a precise measurement. Go a step further than just adding a window treatment and paint the window trim a fun color to maximize the design impact and highlight the curtains. In this charming coastal home, the pale blue window trim livens up the space and complements the block print curtains, brass rod, and rattan accents.

Take color and pattern into account

living room curtain design

This look has a high-end designer feel yet doesn't feel stuffy or too formal. If they're too short, it'll throw off everything else in the room and visually bring the height of the ceiling down. That is why measuring your window and ceiling height is a good starting point.

Classic Black and White

They are typically hung with curtain rings, and in this color-drenched living room, they complement a stunning coffered ceiling and elegant picture molding. Selecting the perfect living room curtain design requires a harmonious fusion of style, practicality, and aesthetic coherence with your existing décor. Start by delving into the essence of your room's vibe—be it contemporary, traditional, or an eclectic blend. Your chosen curtain design should naturally resonate with this overarching style. Curtain rods come in various styles, such as single or double if you want to layer thicker panels with sheers, and in multiple materials.

Pair your heading with your overall style

Window treatments need to be chosen with the requirements for light control and privacy in mind. Shades or blinds may fulfill these roles while the curtains with which they are combined to dress the window are purely decorative, but equally, curtains may need to contribute. Window treatment ideas must complement the room’s style, whether that’s classic or contemporary, and they have a practical aspect, as well an aesthetic one, so your curtain ideas must fulfill all your needs. Hayley McAfee states, 'one of the main fabric trends for curtains I see is patterned and motifs. Curtains are becoming a center piece for the room, as such, there is a willingness to go bolder with the fabric choice. If you want your room to feel more stately and elegant, consider hanging your curtains all the way to your ceiling.

Let an Accent Wall Shine

Roman blinds can create a very streamlined look and work perfectly in a small living room if you want to avoid anything heavy around the windows to allow as much light to stream in as possible. There are multiple ways to hang curtains, but the most common and elegant option is to mount the rod at such a height that the panels “kiss the floor”. Dress up living room windows with pinch pleat details that add a sophisticated touch. This style of curtain features pinched fan-shaped pleats at the top of the panel, which creates a decorative header.

Layer Window Treatments

Think of the other elements in the space when choosing curtain colors for any room, including the living room. Ready-made curtains come in standard sizes, which may provide a good fit for your windows. ‘If you have oversized windows, consider investing in custom drapery made to fit the exact measurements of the window,’ recommends Kelly Simpson. A tricky design to get right, many of us are quite cautious when it comes to decorating with black and black room ideas, as you do not want a room that feels too overwhelming or oppressing. You can also add shutters to give your space even more light and privacy.

Instead of a solid color, consider getting curtains with a simple abstract design. In designer Ariene Bethea's North Carolina home, she incorporated these blue and white curtains with what looks like brushstrokes of watercolor paint from Martha & Ash. The easiest way to give your living room an airy, bright look is with sheer or semi-sheer white curtains. The breezy treatment can even help soften the line between the indoors and outdoors, as it does in this space decorated by David Mann. For a cohesive look, match the pattern of your curtains to some of the furniture and accessories in your living room.

Should curtains in the living room touch the floor?

Here, window treatments are cleverly hung over French doors to provide privacy when necessary. Dark patterned curtains are a good choice if you think solid blackout curtains will be too stark. The floor-to-ceiling look makes more of a statement, but be sure to order curtains that are long enough to skim the floor because they can look unfinished or slightly off if they're too short. Think about this carefully when making decisions on which window treatments will suit your needs best. Take a look at our many options for sprucing up your living room window. Above all else, your living room curtains should fit into the style of the space.

Natural light is a great asset to a living room, except for when you’re trying to watch TV and it’s causing a glare. Blackout curtains are an excellent window treatment option as they block light while still providing a beautiful finishing touch. Its thick lining also helps tone down outside noise and maintain room temperature. For an unfussy option for living room curtains that are regularly opened and closed, opt for grommet curtains.

This modern curtain design for the living room creates an illusion of grandeur and spaciousness. Select curtains that match your living room's color scheme and blend seamlessly with the overall design. Ceiling-height curtains draw the eye upwards, making the room feel larger and more luxurious. If you want more balance with your lighting options, use a window treatment that will let the light shine through your window while diffusing the brightness of the sunlight. Another option can be a sheer curtain that’ll increase the contrast of your living room curtain design.

You can accent these prints with throw pillows or area rugs with the same print. Pencil pleat curtains come with little hooks, which although a little frustrating to fasten in place, allow for a neat and uniform drape across the window. If you have a curtain rail, then you can choose to go for curtains with eyelets, which are much easier to hang but must be the right length to avoid pockets of light appearing at the top of the window. The warm saffron hues of these curtains by Neptune, contrast beautifully with the mossy gray walls for an added two-tone dimension. Grow an ‘interior garden’ in your lounge with botanical designs blooming with color and pattern. If creating a calm atmosphere is your priority you can't go wrong with timeless, floaty fabrics says Hayley McAfee, design director at Villa Nova.

Curtains' length and width also make a substantial impact—choose between floor-skimming or above-floor lengths, and consider wider curtains for a broader appearance. Experience versatility with double-panel curtains, featuring both sheer and opaque layers. These curtains seamlessly transition your living room from daytime elegance to nighttime comfort. Choose curtain colors and textures that align with your living room's color scheme and décor. Double-panel curtains provide options for adjusting light levels throughout the day and offer a layered, textured look. Achieve optimal light control and privacy by combining curtains with blinds.

Trump Trial Adjourns Until Tuesday The New York Times

old dark house

Mr. Pecker said that he and The Enquirer sought to help Mr. Trump’s campaign through catch-and-kill deals to suppress negative news about him and through positive headlines that promoted him. She also told prosecutors that she saw Ms. Daniels at Trump Tower. A lawyer for Mr. Trump later suggested that her visit could have been connected to an appearance on “The Apprentice,” his reality show.

David Pecker recounted a Trump Tower meeting where the president-elect offered his thanks.

Prosecutors accused Mr. Trump of sending a message to Mr. Pecker and other witnesses to be “nice,” or get attacked. They said they would submit the additional violations to the court. As Mr. Conroy laid out what he said were violations, Mr. Trump whispered to his lawyer Todd Blanche and frowned. Joshua Steinglass, a prosecutor for Alvin L. Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, said in court last week that after the recording emerged, Mr. Trump was desperate to “lock down the Stormy Daniels story” and prevent more damage. They agreed that Michael Cohen, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer, would have to handle the problem.

“The boss is going to be very angry at you,” Mr. Cohen told Mr. Pecker, he testified Thursday. Mr. Pecker said on Tuesday he had agreed to be the “eyes and ears” of the Trump campaign and used AMI to deal with threats to Mr. Trump’s reputation. Mr. Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement of Mr. Cohen. He has denied the sexual encounters and pleaded not guilty to the charges he faces. The Enquirer’s parent company paid $150,000 to Ms. McDougal, a Playboy model. Mr. Pecker urged Mr. Cohen to handle paying $130,000 to Ms. Daniels, who was shopping her account of the sexual encounter with Mr. Trump, which she said took place in 2006.

Trump’s trial is the latest chapter in the rich history of Lower Manhattan’s courts.

At the Trump Tower meeting, which also included notables like James Comey, then the F.B.I. director, and Reince Priebus, who was chairman of the Republican National Committee, Mr. Pecker reassured Mr. Trump that everything was fine. Mr. Pecker said that Ms. McDougal’s payment was disguised as a contract for services, to avoid violating campaign finance laws. Ms. Graff noted that a company directory had contact entries for both Ms. Daniels and Karen McDougal, another woman who had claimed to have an affair with Mr. Trump.

But that strategy, which led to a tense exchange in the Lower Manhattan courtroom, did not seem to pay off. Mr. Pecker repeatedly rejected characterizations and questions posed by the lawyer, Emil Bove, and resisted the suggestion that he had not been forthright in earlier testimony. The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples. For decades, few people had access to Donald J. Trump like Rhona Graff. Now, Ms. Graff, his former personal assistant at the Trump Organization, became the second person to testify against Mr. Trump in his criminal trial in Lower Manhattan.

Tom stumbles upon the fact that the killer is a woman, and he suspects Morgana, but discovers that Cecily is guilty just before she confesses, explaining that she wanted the entire family estate. Cecily runs from the house, and Tom discovers that she has placed time bombs in all of the clocks in the house. Racing against time, he frantically defuses each of the bombs. With moments to spare, he hurls the last bomb out of the window, and it explodes at Cecily's feet.

Her agent reached out to Dylan Howard, editor of The National Enquirer, and editorial chiefs at other publications, seeking about $200,000 to tell her story of having sex with Mr. Trump a decade before when he was at a golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Mr. Trump, received $150,000 from American Media Inc., The Enquirer’s parent company. When Mr. Pecker voiced concerns about the potentially unlawful implications of the deal, Mr. Cohen had a warning.

Trump continued to speak out.

But as Mr. Bove wrapped up his cross-examination, he asked Mr. Pecker about his obligations in cooperating with the prosecution in the hush-money trial. But just down the street on Foley Square sits Manhattan’s most elegant courthouse building, New York’s Supreme Court, with its sweeping flight of 32 stone steps leading up to a series of imposing Corinthian columns. Ms. Graff heard about a job opening in 1987 at the Trump Organization and cold-called to get the position. Six years later, Ms. Graff’s wedding announcement was published in The New York Times. She married Lucius Joseph Riccio, the city’s commissioner of transportation, in a wedding officiated by Mayor David N. Dinkins. When he left the courtroom, Mr. Trump lashed out at the case against him, veering into territory potentially prohibited by Justice Merchan’s gag order.

Philip and Margaret leave to get an ambulance, while Gladys and William stay behind to tend to Roger's injuries. Upon awakening, Roger asks Gladys to marry him, and she happily kisses him in response.

Mr. Pecker and Mr. Cohen were in frequent contact during the 2016 presidential campaign, strategizing over how to bury threatening news about Mr. Trump before the November election. In urging Mr. Pecker to kill harmful stories, Mr. Cohen often invoked Mr. Trump’s potential anger as a reason for Mr. Pecker to do what he asked. Mr. Trump’s lawyers, led by Emil Bove, started their cross-examination trying to show that such deals were “standard operating procedure” in the supermarket tabloid business and that the magazines published only about half of the stories they bought. Mr. Farro was called to the witness stand on Friday afternoon after brief testimony by Rhona Graff, Mr. Trump’s former longtime executive assistant, who was questioned for about 35 minutes.

The Old Dark House is a 1963 comedy horror film directed by William Castle. A remake of Universal's 1932 film of the same name directed by James Whale, the film is based on the 1927 novel by J. B. In a hearing earlier this week on the 10 previous violations, lawyers for Mr. Trump argued that the former president had been exercising his right to respond to attacks. Prosecutors noted that the gag order did not include exceptions for Mr. Trump to respond to those who criticize him.

Beach house interiors: 18 ways to get the coastal look

Here, the combination of pale colors with the darker finishes balances the feeling of solidity and depth, whilst still making the most of any natural light. Plus, the use of coastal accessories upon the shelves gives the living room a New England-style charm. The blue and white color match dates back centuries, and was often seen on Chinese pottery, and is still popular with today. Breathing new life into the classic beach house look, this scheme features a breezy palette of greige, from soft shades through to darker tones.

The firm quickly became known for delivering exceptional service and beautiful spaces with meticulous attention to detail. Twelve years and over seven hundred projects later, they will not settle for anything less than an extremely happy client. "Let 90 percent of your home be reflective of the coast through colors and textures and 10 percent through literal coastal details—think boats, shells, and whales," Young says.

What is coastal interior design?

Once you are happy with the result, complete the look by adding a few nautically-inspired accessories. The timber flooring and Douglas Fir walls and ceilings impart a rustic charm, coupled with a cozy fireplace nook. Ample built-in storage solutions maintain a clean and clutter-free environment throughout the home. The sunken living area seamlessly transitions into the minimalist kitchen, where a light, tone-on-tone color palette and abundant natural light create an airy and inviting atmosphere. Designer and architect Natalia Miyar is all about comfort and glamour, no matter what style or location she’s working in. With offices in New York, London, and Miami, the designer has tackled a variety of coastal projects, from this lush, garden-inspired Miami home to art-filled modernist and rustic-meets-contemporary villas in Ibiza.

"But the key to balancing the kitsch is to use clean lines in the millwork, an adventurous color palette, and plenty of white space in between the pops of color and theme." When imagining the interior of your modern beach house, think of spaces that embody a seamless blend of comfort and style, integrating natural elements that reflect the outdoor scenery. The coastal design style comprises a vast texture palette because the feeling you are trying to recreate is also full of different textures. Items like driftwood, seashells, and seagrass are directly incorporated into the design for this effect. By getting these elements into your home, you can convert an existing space into a coastal home.

About Decorilla

But a combination of both styles is a simplified and candid version of traditional coastal design. Just like light reflecting on the sandy beach, it illuminates this white interior design too. The kitchen has a spotless and pristine feel while evoking a coastal air thanks to its white and sandy color combo.

Beach house kitchens need a coastal display

We love the big vase of natural grass as a contrast to all those pale colours; you could obviously source the real thing but Wayfair actually do some pretty realistic looking versions. A  quick and easy way to get a lovely, light, beach house look is to use paint. Give your walls a lick of a new coastal colour to instantly transform it into a room that just feels like it belongs by the sea. We love this lovely duck egg blue, it works so nicely with creams and wooden accents.

When you think about incorporating local flair into your modern beach house, taking cues from regional architecture can provide a wealth of inspiration. Designers frequently emphasize the connection to outdoor living spaces by using large sliding doors or floor-to-ceiling windows, encouraging a lifestyle where the line between indoors and outdoors is pleasantly blurred. Expect your beach house to be a testament to modern elegance, with the architecture as a bold statement of personal style and innovation.

beach interior design

Natural materials like stone or pavers can seamlessly blend these patios into the coastal landscape. You can add elements to your existing space and see how the room would look even before being built, what’s more! The encaustic cement tile flooring in this house is made in Morocco by Mosaic House and is reminiscent of the patterned tiles seen in historic island entryways. "The basic rule for making nautical lighting work is the same one that applies to so many other aspects of decorating—don't do too much of it at once," advises trendsetter Christopher Spitzmiller. "Include it sparingly to increase its impact." Simple touches like using rope instead of chains to hang lighting make a big impact. The simple wood-and-iron table and Hans Wegner chairs in this kitchen are an invitation to linger over coffee.

Floor-to-ceiling windows promise uninterrupted beach views, and the wraparound terrace beckons you from morning coffee through to moonlight drinks. Sleek modernity dominates the home decor with just a hint of opulence, but as you’d expect from the Malibu beach home of your dreams it’s the ocean view that takes center stage. Looking for an architect or interior designer in your area for a home renovation or new build?

Combined, these elements will create a casual look characteristic of beach-style homes. Consider the differences between the rocky coastline of a New England beach and a tropical beach in Florida with turquoise blue water. Though they’re both sea and shore, it’s easy to understand both the aesthetic and atmospheric difference between the two. “While both coastal and beachy designs take cues from natural seaside elements through the use of neutral colors and natural textures in the home, there are factors that differentiate the two,” says Hamwey. If the more traditional blue and nautical stripes aren't quite your thing but you love the light, airy feel of coastal interiors, a simple neutral palette can be just as effective at evoking those holiday feels.

Take your love of beach-style design to the next level with oceanic decorating ideas imbuing dreamy homes. With organic textures and a nautical atmosphere, this style overflows with summer holiday vibes! Let’s jump into beach house interior design rich with a cool coastal vibe.

Carnival Cruise Lines: Ask a Question Cruise Critic Message Board Forums

carnival cruise forum

I am just making an observation and trying to come up with an explanation why some people would consider the guests on Venezia "rude". @pe4all @kona_wahine Regarding the clientele of the ship, I don't think it's fair to simply say "New Yorkers are rude". A big factor is that people that live in big cities (NY or Miami) tend to be louder and are used to smaller personal space. I had a friend in college who came from a different country. He was told "back off, you perv" when all he did was standing maybe a foot away from the middle aged lady in front of him at a supermarket checkout line.

However, selecting the right solutions takes preparation and research. This guide outlines five areas of consideration to help you find the right fit. A place to post any severe weather that may effect cruising. A place for everyone to introduce themselves.

Today's Birthdays - Enjoy your day!

Even though NY is our homeport, we have waited on booking Venezia due to some of the problems Mieng mentioned. We were hoping they would straighten out the embarkation/debarkation issues by now. As far as Kona_wahine's comment on NYers tending to be rude - not all of us are - lol! We have had the same issues with some Miami cruises. As far as smoke on CCL ships go - I entirely agree. Wish they would make the casino non-smoking, as the smell does tend to build up and drift to other parts of the ship.

Carnival Cruise Lines

He eventually left to drive his shuttle and a woman came over to get 1 woman to go on a shuttle. We all followed and were told it was only for the 1 woman. That happened a few times and about 90 minutes of waiting my group of 2 were put on a huge shuttle by ourselves and taken to JFK.

carnival cruise forum

Obviously that lady preferred to have more personal space and felt that he was encroaching to the point of being offensive. Sept embarkation was a smooth process - long, but smooth. There were 8 of us (not traveling together, just 8 random passengers) who all had pre-paid for JFK shuttle. It was pouring down 🌧 no shuttle to be found and nobody to help. The driver for the LGA shuttle was trying to help and eventually learned no shuttle was ordered so "they" were working on it.

The key lime pie in the buffet had not a drop of lime juice, was just sweetened condensed milk. The bass with Charleston grits was served in four small bites placed evenly over the grits, but that was fine because it was too hard and dried out to eat anyway. Even the tall cakes had more fluffy, flavorless icing made of vegetable shortening than actual cake.

Even after meeting with the maitre de on day 1 and getting on a list, we never got moved. First time in almost 30 cruises that we never got our request. Table mates were very nice, but just the principle . Just to be clear, I am not making any judgment.

Carnival Freedom Roll Calls

Not a fan of the Playlist Production shows - one was good early on with live musicians; magician and juggler weren't bad. Discover how it can help attract renters in the digital age. Cementing your CRE portfolio’s long-term growth means assembling a great tech stack to support your goals.

I posted my review and it’s waiting for the censor to approve, but I thought to provide a few more practical tips to folks on the boards here. Search for or add a roll call for any sailing on the Sunshine. I thought the ship was beautiful and the food was pretty good.

I didn’t mind the cold days because we still had a full cruise worth of hot days. I personally wouldn’t take a 7 day from NY in the winter but I’ll gladly take these longer itineraries. It’s too bad Carnival decided not to do winter in NY again. We are platinum and had early seating - requested a table for 2 - and wound up at a table for 8, which turned into 6.

Tell everyone about your experience at your ships home port. Give advice on where to park and what to expect during check in. From the outside looking in it doesn’t look like Carnival had any trouble filling Venezia for the upcoming winter cruises but I understand if that’s not the case. Almost an all-out brawl watching NFL game on the big screen - Eagles vs. San Francisco - crazy fans going at it.

I have spoken at length about the disgusting food I ate on my last Carnival cruise. It was so bad I knew people would accuse me of hyperbole. I am sorry that you realized it was the truth too late.
